putting things in order
Confession: I've never had writer's block. I've had periods where I didn't write for lots of reasons, but never because I didn't know how to make the words come. I'm very simple on this front: writing is typing first and foremost, and I can always type.
Anyway, I have another harebrained idea that I've been suppressing for some months, but I've finally decided to start a Substack (a different newsletter) to exorcise them. It's half-parody, half-literary, but fully my diseased brain. I'm going to keep this newsletter active, because I still want a place I can sound off at random and share links and so forth (uh, which I will do again someday, I'm positive!). But for now, I just wanted to let y'all know that I'll be writing about children's books here: The Jangler. The idea is to be so serious it's silly, and I hope you enjoy.
Happy Friday!
Reading: Almost exclusively P.D. James novels! She's among my favorite mystery writers, but quickly becoming a favorite without qualification. I'd write more about her, but I have an essay stewing I might try to place somewhere soon. If you haven't read her, I recommend Shroud for a Nightingale as a good start, and then Black Tower and A Taste for Death. If you enjoy those, start at the beginning and read everything! I've also been picking at some Augustine and The New Atlantis journal, but it's been pretty sparse, to be honest. I'm hoping to get to the new Francis Spufford soon (another favorite writer), and Bill and I are planning on doing a podcast about Connie Willis's Doomsday Book, possibly the most covid-relevant book I could ever imagine, written like 30 years ago. Highly recommend.
Thanks for reading. I love you all.
